“I don’t think Kevin is a Harvey Weinstein. … It’s a real detriment to deprive us of [him] on the screen,” says Michael Zaiko Hall, writer-director of the low-budget indie thriller ‘Peter Five Eight.’
Filmmaker Michael Zaiko Hall knew he was courting controversy by casting Kevin Spacey as the lead in his thriller Peter Five Eight. As the film becomes available on streaming services, Hall vigorously defends casting the two-time Oscar winner, citing Spacey’s “rare talent.”
The film marks Spacey’s first lead role since being acquitted of nine sexual misconduct charges in a 2023 London trial. Despite further allegations aired in a Channel 4 documentary, Spacey has denied any illegal behavior.
Spacey was also cleared of allegations by Anthony Rapp, as a jury in New York found in October 2022 that Rapp failed to prove his claim of sexual abuse. Spacey told Lex Fridman that Hollywood lacks forgiveness, but Hall hopes his indie thriller can shift attitudes toward Spacey.
In Peter Five Eight, Spacey plays a charismatic man in black who follows an alcoholic real-estate agent, uncovering her long-kept secret. Produced independently, the film is available on-demand in the U.S., with a U.K. release pending.

Hall, who started in visual effects and is directing his fourth feature, discussed the “controversial” casting choice with The Hollywood Reporter. The script was written before Spacey’s involvement, but as discussions evolved, Spacey emerged as the top choice for the role. The crew unanimously agreed that Spacey was the best fit for the character.
Hall acknowledges the controversy but believes Spacey’s inclusion makes the film more compelling. Production began in late 2021, and despite Spacey’s charges delaying the release, Hall stands by his decision, calling Spacey a “rare talent.”
After seeing the evidence and having conversations with Spacey’s management, Hall felt the allegations were exaggerated. He asserts that denying Spacey a place on the screen due to cancel culture is detrimental to the industry.
Hall shared anecdotes highlighting Spacey’s character, contrasting him with figures like Harvey Weinstein and Armie Hammer, whom he labeled as “psychopaths.” He believes Spacey, a “sweet man,” deserves to continue his career.
Following publication, Hall issued a statement apologizing for his comments on Armie Hammer, admitting they were insensitive and unhelpful. He emphasized the need for more forgiveness and less judgment in the world.
